A Short History of Easingwold Primary School

A Short History of Easingwold Primary School

The buildings, which now constitute the Primary School, were originally built to serve as a Grammar School.
In 1905 the ‘Tin Tabernacle’ was built, as a temporary building, to house the pupils until the permanent building was constructed.

However, many years later this building is still standing. For a number of years it was used as a dining hall, where the children had to eat their food in silence. At present it is once again a classroom, although the school kitchens have used a quarter of the area as a food store.

The following year the main buildings, which are still present today, were completed. Originally there were four classrooms along the front (where there are now three rooms). These were heated by stoves, had high ceilings and were well ventilated. Children were not as clean as they are today! At the back of the building were two further classrooms (now the Library and Art Base) connected by a partition and a hall (now the Music and Resources Room).

The boys used the right hand side entrance whilst the girls used the left.

When the Comprehensive School was built in 1954 the old Grammar School was converted into a Primary School, and it was probably about then that that two further classrooms were added to the ends of the existing building.

In this early photograph of the Primary School the ‘Tin Tabernacle’ can be seen to the right of the photograph. Note there was no driveway into the school then.

Over the years many buildings have been added. In 1973 a staff room and flat roofed classroom were constructed and in the late 70’s a hall was built at the rear of the school.

The latest building to be completed which houses two reception rooms, cloakroom and toilets. This was opened by Prince Andrew in 2002 This site was formerly occupied by an open-air swimming pool, which never was able to reach its full potential as a learner pool.

The school continues to thrive and grow and there are now plans to extend the existing hall when funds become available.
